Alliteration and symbolism was laid throughout the entire story, not just in the title. An example of symbolism in the story would be that the judges represent fate, they were the ones who were to choose whether he would die or not. It intensified how the man was feeling when he was trying to get the rats to break him free. The rats also happen to represent hope because they were his only way to freedom. Obstacles and events like the man trying to break free with the help of vermin are the main elements that create the suspense. Here the suspense is the lack of background knowledge of why he was being sentenced.
He also faced the challenge of death when he was walking across the cell. He trips on his own robe and almost falls inside the pit. The title, the use of figurative language, and the challenges the man faces is what keeps the audience begging for more. Remember: This is just a sample from a fellow student. Horror And Death In Edgar Allen Poe's The Cask Of Amontillado.
This device creates a horror and sense of impending doom by its slow travel down towards the narrator. Doing this causes the subject to know what is going to happen to them when the pendulum reaches them and causes a huge amount of terror as they brace themselves to die. All these tortures can have an overwhelming effect on a person 's psyche, despite this it appears that the narrator is still able to keep calm enough to think through what is happening to him. The final major form of torture is the pit and walls of the cell. These walls are designed to heat up and close in on whoever is inside.
These are both are showing that something deep and scary is going on and you are immediately pulled in because of the implied fear in the atmosphere of the story. The narrator is also not informed on the reasons or basis of his own punishment. He is being punishment for a seemingly pointless or nonexistent reason, and leave the reader to make assumptions on why the narrator is being imprisoned. Perhaps the most horrific part of the story is the encounters with death that the narrator has. They are the most horrific as they make the reader imagine going through such a death experience.
At first, the pendulum seems to be on an unstoppable course towards the narrator and has a lust for blood. In The Fall of the House of Usher, Edgar Allan Poe utilizes his famously grim writing to tell the story of an unnamed narrator witnessing the literal fall of the Usher family -- Roderick and Madeline of Usher. While the plotline itself is dark and mysterious, Poe employs various literary devices to fully express the creepiness of the story. One useful literary device used in this story is setting. The setting amplifies the emotions and state of the characters and helps to clearly define themes throughout the tale. Poe uses an ominous and eerie setting to convey the central themes relating to madness, family, and fear while unifying the story under the single effect of terror.
This comes as a direct result of the previous developments of wariness of the house and exaggeration of the senses. Roderick Usher follows the same progression, giving into his uneasiness of the house and acute senses until he becomes consumed with fear and ultimately dies of fright. This shows how his fears, which could have previously been kept under control, now overwhelm him. In this story, the perspective shown is first person, and we are able to see the thoughts, actions, and feelings of the main character from their own mind. In this case, the feelings of overpowered fear and terror is overwhelming the narrator. This answers the question from earlier, what would you be feeling if you were in a situation like this?
You would be feeling fear. It was not a groan of pain or of grief-oh, no! People in their deep and darkest minds all feel pleasure with pain they inflict on others. Poe also uses a term…. Immediately into the story, Poe ignites fear and uncertainty, depicting the terror of the calamity. It 's supposed to be a safe hideaway for the Prince, but instead, the people in it are the ones trapped by death. No matter how rich or powerful one is, death is inevitable. This is a convincing alliteration to indirectly give the feeling of horror to readers. The significance of the relationships in the vital descriptions of the mansion and Roderick are wholly disconcerting and only further the frightening feeling that is heavily prevalent from the moment the narrator sets his eyes on the property.
Ultimately, the majorly abhorrent incestuous basis of the Usher lineage that both the decaying house and Roderick are built upon ends up destroying the two in a tragically petrifying way. Because Poe focuses the majority of his gruesome descriptions on the effects that incest has had on the family, he successfully creates an ominously perplexing….
